A dream come true: Nova Scotia woman wins $5.3-million Lotto 6/49 jackpot prize

HALIFAX (NS) – Olga Beno dreamed a set of lottery numbers in May 1989 and has faithfully stuck with them throughout the years. As 2016 came to a close, those numbers turned into a $5.3-million Lotto 6/49 jackpot win for the Eastern Passage woman.

“If I had to describe how it feels in one word, I would say: magnificent,” Olga said.

It took Olga a day and a half after the Dec. 28 draw before she realized she was a multi-millionaire, despite the large amount of media attention about a winning Lotto 6/49 ticket being sold in the Halifax area.

“I know my numbers by heart, and I thought I saw them on the television screen the evening after the draw, but my eyes aren’t good,” Olga said. “So I forgot about it.”
The next morning, Olga was chatting on the phone to her sister while leafing through the newspaper when she spotted the familiar digits again.

“At first I thought – it can’t be. It’s a mistake in the paper. Then I said to my sister, ‘I think I won the lottery.’ She said ‘Phone me back when you want to tell me the truth.’”

It was as true as can be – Olga held one of two winning Lotto 6/49 tickets worth $5.3 million from the Dec. 28 draw. The second ticket was sold in western Canada.
Ten years ago, Olga was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and had to sell her home and begin renting. Her plans for the $5.3-million prize include building an accessible, ranch-style house. She credits her husband, children and grandchildren with helping her survive the illness, so her lottery win will also go toward spoiling her family and taking a trip to Disney World.

“I’m a big kid at heart,” Olga said.

Circle K (#2063) in Eastern Passage, N.S., sold the winning ticket. The retailer will receive a one per cent sellers prize.
