The Moose? Or the million?

New Brunswick’s latest millionaire wins BOTH draws

EDMUNDSTON (NB) – Mathieu Levesque is a millionaire at 23 years old. But being $1 million richer didn’t immediately change Levesque’s priorities – first he had to go moose hunting. Levesque received a moose licence for the first time this year and after claiming his prize at Atlantic Lottery headquarters in Moncton earlier this week, he drove to the woods of northern New Brunswick to hunt moose with his uncle, as planned.

“If we get our moose on Tuesday, we’ll come back out to celebrate a bit,” said Levesque earlier this week. “But if not, we’ll stay out until the season ends on Saturday.” Levesque eventually came out today to pick up his big cheque.

The young welder from Edmundston, N.B., was one of six MAXMILLIONS winners for the September 9 LOTTO MAX draw - the only one in Atlantic Canada.

“I play LOTTO MAX almost every week,” Levesque said. “Other than the odd free ticket, I’ve never won anything.”

Levesque purchased the ticket after work the week of the draw and it sat under a pile of blankets in his closet for more than a week before he checked the numbers during a stop in Perth-Andover.

“I heard on the radio that someone had won, so I stopped in a store to check it,” he said. “The first person I called was my mom. She was pretty excited and it felt like a very long drive home.”

Levesque says retirement is not an option. He is planning to think carefully about how to spend his winnings, but he said he knows he’d like to travel.

Armstrong Convenience in Chipman, N.B., sold the winning ticket and will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
